Computer/Monitor Recycling
|
|
| Purpose |
- Recycle computers that are still useful
- ReBuild Working System to donate to certified 501(c)(3) entities
- schools, associations, etc
- Some people want to learn how to take apart, debug and build PCs
|
| Explanations/Reasoning |
- Todays obsolete PCs still provides enough power of the supercomputers of 20yrs ago
- A typical 386/486 is good enough for a firewall, spam/virus filters
- old PCs are good for ppp dialup servers
- old PCs are good for backup servers
- Learn to install linux on old hardware - to learn linux ( device drivers )
- no harm done if the machine doesnt install, breaks etc .. its recyclable
- Not all school districts has the manpower and budget to get properly connected
- We can maintain all the servers we donate for them... for "tax deductable" contributions ??
- Most pc are still running or was running till it broke, and need spare parts
- Cannot just throw away a monitor ( has lots of non-healthy stuff )
|
| Temporary Logistics Issues |
- Need Place to store the PCs for disassembly
- Need Place to keep the servers up and running prior to shipping
- garage or small office
- preferably 24hr access so people can work late if needed to get servers running
- Need a place that offers "tax deductable" donation receipts for "recycled computers"
- worst case -- Apply for our own 501(c)(3) status
|
| Collecting Old PCs |
- Collect PCs for recycling on a daily basis ( when the donor's say come get it )
- Proposed Schedule
- 1st Monday - Strip and Test each component and Documenting
- 2nd Monday - Assemble into working linux servers
- 3nd Monday - Testing and QA before Releasing
- 4th Monday - catch up
|
| Distributing |
